Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed investment firm, has firmly established itself as Asia’s most aggressive corporate Bitcoin buyer. Barely 48 hours after completing a $53.4 million acquisition of 555 BTC, the company has announced yet another bold step: a fresh $21.25 million raise through a new issue of zero-coupon bonds. This capital will be used exclusively to buy more Bitcoin, cementing Metaplanet’s trajectory as a long-term institutional Bitcoin holder.
Zero-Coupon Bonds Fuel the Strategy
The $21.25 million bond issuance, confirmed in a May 9 announcement following a board of directors meeting, comes in the form of “0% Ordinary Bonds.” These zero-coupon bonds are unique in that they do not pay interest but are typically sold at a discount, with the bondholder receiving full face value at maturity. This approach gives Metaplanet flexible, low-cost financing to expand its BTC treasury without incurring ongoing debt service costs.
The issuance will include the 14th Stock Acquisition Rights allocation to EVO Fund, a Cayman Islands-based investment entity. The bonds will mature on November 7, and all proceeds are earmarked exclusively for Bitcoin purchases.
At current prices, the $21.25 million would allow Metaplanet to purchase approximately 206 BTC—further increasing its already substantial holdings.
Building a Strategic Bitcoin Treasury
Just two days prior, on May 7, Metaplanet stunned the market by revealing it had purchased 555 BTC at an average price of $96,134 per coin. That purchase brought the firm’s total Bitcoin holdings to 5,555 BTC, acquired at a cumulative cost of $481.5 million and an average price of $86,672.
These moves mark a clear and deliberate strategy: Metaplanet is not speculating. It is building a treasury infrastructure centered around Bitcoin, with plans to expand globally. The firm recently announced the launch of Metaplanet Treasury, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary based in Florida, with plans to raise an additional $250 million to further fuel its Bitcoin acquisitions.
Market Response and Share Price Boom
Market enthusiasm for Metaplanet’s bold Bitcoin strategy has been significant. Over the last year, the company’s share price has soared by more than 1,600%, reflecting investor confidence in its long-term vision. Shares currently trade at ¥511 (approximately $3.50), a dramatic climb for a company that was relatively obscure outside Japan just one year ago.
Metaplanet’s pivot toward Bitcoin has transformed its brand, market perception, and global relevance—particularly as many Asian firms remain hesitant to commit to such a crypto-heavy strategy.
Joining the Global Ranks of Bitcoin Treasury Firms
With its 5,555 BTC stash, Metaplanet now ranks as the largest corporate Bitcoin holder in Asia and the 11th largest globally, according to BitcoinTreasuries.net. It stands alongside giants like MicroStrategy, Tesla, and Block in what’s becoming a competitive race to accumulate Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset.
Other firms have begun following this model. On May 7, Strive Asset Management announced it would transform into a Bitcoin treasury company. Meanwhile, GameStop concluded a $1.5 billion convertible debt offering earlier this year, with a portion allocated to BTC purchases. The movement echoes the “Bitcoin standard” approach pioneered by Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy—an approach that has now gone international.
A Coordinated, Scalable BTC Strategy
What differentiates Metaplanet from other firms entering the space is its structured financial engineering. By leveraging zero-coupon bonds and acquiring BTC in methodical tranches, Metaplanet is applying institutional-grade balance sheet strategies to accumulate digital assets without exposing itself to high-risk leverage or volatile altcoins.
The company’s multistage approach—including bond issuances, international subsidiaries, and dollar-based fundraising—demonstrates a well-developed, long-term thesis. This is not a speculative trade. It is a corporate reconfiguration, aimed at aligning the firm’s financial identity with the growth trajectory of Bitcoin as a digital reserve currency.
Japan’s Role in the Global Crypto Race
Metaplanet’s aggressiveness is particularly significant given Japan’s historically cautious regulatory stance on crypto. By taking this approach, the company may be signaling a broader shift in Asia’s financial sector—where traditional firms, once hesitant, are now recognizing Bitcoin’s strategic role on the balance sheet.
Should Metaplanet’s example prove successful, it may influence other Japanese and Asian firms to pursue similar strategies. With its U.S. subsidiary soon operational, Metaplanet is also strategically positioning itself to access deeper capital markets and institutional relationships in North America.
A New Era of Corporate Bitcoin Holdings
This latest bond raise confirms what markets are beginning to accept: Metaplanet is not just buying Bitcoin—it is reshaping itself around it. The firm’s evolution from a relatively unknown investment company to a Bitcoin-focused treasury powerhouse represents a shift in corporate finance that may define this cycle of digital asset adoption.
As institutional players look for guidance on how to build Bitcoin exposure, Metaplanet’s blueprint may become a widely followed model. The company is executing on a Bitcoin-first vision with surgical precision and clear capital efficiency—something even larger firms have struggled to achieve.
Looking Ahead
With $21.25 million in new capital en route and 5,555 BTC already secured, Metaplanet is on track to exceed 5,700 BTC by mid-2025. Its upcoming $250 million U.S. raise could dramatically increase that number—potentially vaulting it into the global top five Bitcoin-holding corporations.
The broader implications are clear: Bitcoin’s role in institutional finance is accelerating, and companies like Metaplanet are rewriting the rules of treasury management in real time.
