Ripple ETFs: Why SEC Delays May Signal Eventual Approval

The debate over whether Ripple ETFs will be approved in the United States continues to intensify. Despite a wave of optimism in the crypto market following the launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has consistently delayed its decisions on Ripple’s exchange-traded products. While these postponements frustrate investors, they may also point to an eventual green light, echoing the path other crypto ETFs have already taken.

With political tensions, regulatory hurdles, and market appetite colliding, Ripple ETFs sit at the center of a debate that could reshape institutional adoption of XRP.

SEC’s Pattern of Delays

The SEC has a long track record of postponing ETF approvals. When spot Bitcoin ETFs were first filed, they faced numerous delays before receiving approval in early 2024. The same occurred with Ethereum ETFs, which went through multiple rounds of revisions, public comment periods, and regulatory scrutiny.

Ripple ETFs are now following this same trajectory. In mid-August, the SEC extended deadlines for several spot XRP ETF applications until October, requesting issuers to adjust their filings. Earlier this week, Franklin Templeton’s application was also delayed, pushing its decision date to November.

For investors, this is frustrating but not unexpected. Regulatory agencies often use delays as a tool to manage political pressure and gather more data before making final decisions.

The Political Dimension

Crypto regulation is highly politicized in the U.S., especially in a year where elections dominate the agenda. Approving Ripple ETFs would effectively acknowledge institutional demand for XRP, a step that could be interpreted as a broader policy shift toward digital assets.

Some analysts argue that the SEC is intentionally dragging its feet to avoid appearing overly aggressive in a sensitive political environment. A delay allows the agency to maintain control over the narrative while carefully reviewing issues such as custody, settlement, and surveillance-sharing agreements.

According to Reuters: https://www.reuters.com, regulatory agencies often act cautiously in politically charged years, especially when new financial products could reshape market dynamics.

Ripple ETFs and Market Demand

Despite delays, the demand for Ripple ETFs is clear. Wall Street has demonstrated significant appetite for exposure to crypto assets through regulated products. Bitcoin ETFs quickly attracted billions in inflows, and Ethereum ETFs followed with strong volumes.

Institutional investors want the same access to XRP, particularly because Ripple continues to expand its utility in cross-border payments and financial partnerships. A Ripple ETF would allow funds, pension managers, and other institutions to allocate capital without directly managing wallets or custody.

In this sense, Ripple ETFs are not just inevitable; they are the logical next step in bridging traditional finance and blockchain ecosystems.

Why Delays Do Not Equal Rejection

Industry experts emphasize that delays are not rejections. In fact, many view them as part of the normal process toward eventual approval. John Squire, a prominent member of the XRP community with over 500,000 followers on X, recently highlighted that the SEC almost always delays initial filings.

This view is supported by the path taken by Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. Both faced multiple extensions, only to be approved once regulators were satisfied with compliance frameworks. By applying the same logic, Ripple ETFs appear to be on track for eventual approval rather than outright denial.

Betting Markets and Expert Opinions

Polymarket, a decentralized prediction platform, places the odds of Ripple ETFs being approved in 2025 at close to 100%. This aligns with comments from ETF experts such as Nate Geraci of the ETF Institute, who has argued that approval is only a matter of time.

If these predictions hold true, investors may be underestimating the speed with which Ripple ETFs could enter the market. The combination of institutional pressure, political calculations, and precedent set by Bitcoin and Ethereum makes eventual approval highly likely.

According to CoinMarketCap: https://coinmarketcap.com, XRP remains one of the top-traded cryptocurrencies globally, further reinforcing its candidacy for ETF integration.

International Context

While the U.S. delays, other countries are moving forward with digital asset products. Europe and Asia have taken more aggressive steps in approving crypto ETFs, allowing investors greater access to regulated exposure. If the U.S. continues to stall, it risks losing its position as a leader in financial innovation.

This international competition adds urgency to the debate. Approving Ripple ETFs would not only satisfy domestic demand but also signal that the U.S. intends to remain at the forefront of crypto finance.

Ripple ETFs Are a Matter of “When,” Not “If”

The ongoing delays may frustrate the XRP community, but they should be seen as part of a broader strategy rather than a sign of rejection. The SEC appears to be applying the same playbook it used for Bitcoin and Ethereum, buying time before ultimately approving the products.

For investors and institutions alike, the conclusion seems inevitable: Ripple ETFs will arrive. The real question is not whether they will be approved but when.

When that day comes, it will not only validate XRP as a strategic digital asset but also mark another milestone in the integration of blockchain with traditional finance.
