The privacy coin Monero has entered uncharted territory after experiencing the Monero largest reorg in its twelve-year history. The event, which erased 36 minutes of transaction history and invalidated more than one hundred transfers, is raising serious concerns over the resilience of the network and the risks posed by concentrated mining power.

While the price of Monero’s native token, XMR, appeared resilient in the immediate aftermath, the long-term implications of such a deep rollback cannot be dismissed. Exchanges, miners, and investors are now reconsidering their assumptions about security thresholds and confirmations that were once taken for granted.

What happened during the reorg

On September 14, Monero’s blockchain underwent an 18-block reorganization. This meant that the official ledger discarded 18 previously validated blocks, including 118 confirmed transactions. The rollback lasted 36 minutes of network history, an unprecedented figure for a project that has long prided itself on privacy and security.

Independent observers quickly linked the reorg to mining pool Qubic, which had withheld blocks and later released a longer private chain. Because Monero’s proof-of-work mechanism automatically recognizes the longest valid chain as the “true” one, the network accepted Qubic’s version of history, effectively erasing dozens of confirmed payments.

The event has been labeled the Monero largest reorg so far, highlighting how vulnerable even established proof-of-work networks can be when hash power becomes concentrated.

The role of selfish mining

Selfish mining is a controversial practice where miners hoard discovered blocks instead of publishing them immediately. By later releasing a longer chain, they can override the existing ledger and potentially invalidate other participants’ work.

In this case, Qubic’s hidden chain grew longer than the public one before it was revealed. When it finally went live, all nodes switched over automatically, as required by consensus rules. While this behavior does not necessarily mean malicious intent, it underscores how proof-of-work incentives can be exploited in ways that destabilize the network.

For exchanges and merchants, the Monero largest reorg serves as a wake-up call. The old assumption that ten confirmations were sufficient to guarantee finality no longer holds true. Some exchanges have already extended their confirmation requirements for XMR transactions to mitigate the risk of double-spending.

Historical context and 51% attack fears

This is not the first time Monero’s security has come under scrutiny. Just last month, Qubic was suspected of briefly testing a 51% attack, though community members debated whether the attempt actually crossed the threshold of majority control.

A 51% attack occurs when a single miner or pool controls more than half of a blockchain’s computational power. This control allows them to reverse or block transactions and even engage in double-spending. For Monero, the largest reorg reinforces fears that concentrated hash power could compromise the network’s integrity if not addressed.

Market reaction and price resilience

Interestingly, Monero’s price did not collapse after the rollback. In fact, XMR rose over 5% on the day of the event and has gained nearly 12% in the week, trading above $300 according to CoinGecko: https://www.coingecko.com.

This suggests that traders remain confident in Monero’s value as the leading privacy coin, or perhaps that speculative dynamics outweigh security concerns in the short term. However, long-term holders and institutions may see the Monero largest reorg as a red flag, prompting demands for stronger decentralization among miners.

Why decentralization matters

Decentralization is the cornerstone of blockchain security. When mining power consolidates in a handful of pools, the risk of manipulation grows significantly. For Monero, which positions itself as the premier privacy-focused cryptocurrency, the trust of its users relies heavily on a decentralized and censorship-resistant network.

The recent rollback has already pushed some community members to call for changes in mining distribution. Suggestions include encouraging smaller pools, adjusting proof-of-work parameters, or adopting mechanisms that make selfish mining less profitable.

Implications for privacy coins

Monero has long been the benchmark for privacy coins, with ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions making it nearly impossible to trace payments. However, the Monero largest reorg shows that anonymity is not the only factor in network reliability. Stability, decentralization, and resistance to manipulation are equally critical.

Other privacy coins such as Zcash and Dash have avoided similar incidents recently and, in some cases, posted stronger price performance. Layer-2 privacy solutions like Starknet and ZKSync have also attracted attention, proving that competition in the privacy market is heating up.

If Monero fails to address these structural issues, users may look to alternatives that combine strong privacy features with more robust security frameworks.

Lessons for the wider crypto ecosystem

The incident highlights a broader truth about blockchain: no system is immune to risks. Even long-standing projects with established communities can face existential threats when incentives are misaligned.

For developers, the Monero largest reorg underscores the importance of designing mechanisms that discourage selfish behavior and ensure fair participation. For exchanges, it is a reminder to adjust risk management policies, especially around confirmation requirements. And for investors, it is a cautionary tale about relying too heavily on reputation without monitoring underlying network health.

Final reflection

Monero’s largest rollback in history is more than a technical hiccup; it is a signal that trust in privacy networks cannot be taken for granted. While the market price has so far shrugged off the event, the reputational impact could linger far longer.

The Monero largest reorg should spark serious discussions about decentralization, mining incentives, and long-term network governance. Privacy remains a critical pillar of the crypto economy, but it must rest on a foundation of security and stability. Only then can Monero and similar projects maintain their relevance in an increasingly competitive environment.
