The KOSPI crash that erased more than $2 trillion from South Korea’s equity market was not a conventional response to collapsing profits, a recession or a sudden deterioration in the country’s industrial base. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were generating record earnings. Semiconductor exports remained one of the principal engines of the Korean economy. Global demand for high-bandwidth memory was still being supported by the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Yet the market suffered one of the most violent reversals in its history.
The benchmark KOSPI fell approximately 34% from its June peak by July 28 and briefly approached a drawdown of 40% during the following session. On July 28 alone, the index lost 10.84%, closing at 6,023.66 after a circuit breaker interrupted trading. A day later, the index fell as much as 12.6% intraday before recovering part of the decline. The collapse erased as much as $2.18 trillion in market capitalization from the June record high.
The volatility did not end with the decline. The KOSPI subsequently surged almost 18% in a single session, its largest daily advance on record, before falling another 5.12% on August 3 to close at 6,257.45. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both declined almost 9% during that session, demonstrating that the market had not yet returned to a normal process of price discovery.
These movements reveal the real meaning of the KOSPI crash.
South Korea’s equity market had become a highly concentrated, leveraged and reflexive expression of the global artificial intelligence investment cycle. When expectations stopped rising, prices did not merely adjust to a slightly lower earnings forecast. Leveraged products, margin loans, foreign portfolio rebalancing and forced liquidations began interacting with one another.
The result was a market in which selling created additional selling, volatility created additional hedging requirements and falling collateral values forced investors to close positions irrespective of their long-term view of the underlying companies.
The KOSPI crash should therefore be examined as more than a Korean market event. It is a warning about what can happen when an economically credible investment theme becomes inseparable from leverage, index concentration and the expectation that capital expenditure will continue expanding indefinitely.
The KOSPI Crash Was Built During the Rally
The immediate cause of the KOSPI crash was the sharp decline in semiconductor stocks, but the structural conditions were established much earlier.
During the twelve months leading to the June 2026 peak, the KOSPI more than tripled in value. In the first half of 2026 alone, the index nearly doubled as investors pursued companies expected to benefit from the global expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix became the most important expressions of that trade because advanced memory is essential for training and operating large AI models.
This was not an entirely irrational rally. The demand for high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM and enterprise solid-state storage was real. The profits reported by the two Korean chipmakers were also real.
The problem was that a valid technological trend became a crowded financial position.
As prices rose, the market attracted additional foreign capital, domestic retail investors, margin borrowing and leveraged investment products. Each new inflow increased the index weight of the largest chipmakers and strengthened the appearance that the rally itself was confirming the underlying thesis.
The feedback loop looked stable while prices were rising:
Higher demand for AI infrastructure increased expectations for memory-chip profits.
Higher earnings expectations pushed Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares upward.
Their rising market capitalizations lifted the KOSPI.
The stronger index attracted additional momentum capital.
Leveraged products increased their exposure to preserve their daily return targets.
Retail investors interpreted the gains as evidence that additional borrowing was justified.
This circular process became dangerous because it depended on continuous positive price momentum.
Once the direction reversed, every mechanism that had accelerated the rally began operating in the opposite direction.
The KOSPI crash was therefore not created only by disappointing information. It was created by a market structure that had become dependent on increasingly favorable information.
South Korea Stopped Behaving Like a Traditional Economic Bellwether
South Korean equities have historically been considered an important indicator of global industrial activity.
The country occupies a central position in international supply chains involving semiconductors, consumer electronics, automobiles, batteries, shipbuilding, petrochemicals and heavy machinery. Movements in Korean exports and equities have often provided early information about the direction of global manufacturing and trade.
By mid-2026, however, that relationship had weakened.
Reuters reported that the market had increasingly separated from many of its traditional economic drivers as flows into leveraged single-stock products became one of the most important determinants of daily prices. KOSPI volatility increased so dramatically that a market once used to interpret global demand began influencing Wall Street through forced positioning and cross-market deleveraging.
This transformation is one of the most important lessons of the KOSPI crash.
An index can retain the same name, companies and national identity while its internal behavior changes completely. Investors who continued treating the KOSPI as a simple representation of Korean exports were no longer analyzing the instrument actually being traded.
The index had become a hybrid structure containing several different exposures:
A long-term investment in South Korea’s industrial and technological capabilities.
A concentrated position in two global memory-chip producers.
A leveraged bet on continued artificial intelligence expenditure.
A momentum strategy influenced by retail participation.
A foreign-exchange position connected to the Korean won.
An emerging-market allocation sensitive to global dollar liquidity.
A market-structure trade affected by daily-reset leveraged ETFs.
When these exposures moved in the same direction, the KOSPI produced exceptional returns. When they began moving against one another, the index became unstable.
Samsung and SK Hynix Turned the Index Into a Two-Company System
One of the defining characteristics of the KOSPI crash was the extraordinary concentration of the benchmark.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together represented more than half of the KOSPI’s market value or weighting during the peak of the AI rally. A decline in both companies therefore affected the broader index even when hundreds of other Korean businesses were experiencing no comparable fundamental deterioration.
This created a structural vulnerability.
In a diversified index, weakness in one sector can be offset by strength elsewhere. Banks, automakers, healthcare companies, consumer businesses or industrial groups may continue performing even when technology falls.
In the Korean market, the two largest semiconductor companies had become powerful enough to dominate the direction of the entire benchmark. Investors buying a broad KOSPI product were therefore receiving a much more concentrated exposure than the index label suggested.
The KOSPI crash demonstrates that diversification cannot be evaluated only by counting the number of companies in an index. Investors must examine how much weight is assigned to each company and how strongly the largest constituents are exposed to the same economic driver.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are different corporations, but both depend heavily on the memory cycle, AI infrastructure investment, semiconductor pricing, capital expenditure decisions and global technology demand.
When both companies decline simultaneously, the diversification benefit between them becomes limited.
This concentration also changed the behavior of institutional investors. Global funds tracking benchmarks could become unintentionally overexposed as the two companies increased in value. Active managers then faced pressure to sell not necessarily because they had lost confidence in the businesses, but because the positions had become too large relative to portfolio risk limits.
The foreign selling that preceded the KOSPI crash was therefore not automatically evidence that international investors had abandoned South Korea.
In many cases, it represented mechanical rebalancing after an exceptional rally.
Foreign Capital Was Leaving Before the Panic Began
Foreign investors sold approximately $70.8 billion of South Korean equities during the first half of 2026. In June alone, estimates showed between $12.63 billion and $30.5 billion in outflows depending on the dataset and portfolio-flow methodology used. July added another 18.5 trillion won, equivalent to roughly $13 billion, in net foreign selling.
These numbers confirm that the KOSPI crash did not begin as a single-session panic.
The reduction in foreign exposure had already been developing for months.
Part of the selling reflected profit-taking. South Korea had become one of the strongest-performing markets in the world, while Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix had become increasingly dominant inside emerging-market portfolios.
Part of the selling reflected concentration management. Pension funds, mutual funds and global asset managers often operate under limits governing country, sector and individual-company exposure. When a position appreciates rapidly, managers may need to sell merely to return the portfolio to its intended risk allocation.
Part of the selling also reflected a wider reassessment of the AI trade. Investors were questioning whether the enormous capital expenditure announced by hyperscalers, chip designers and infrastructure providers would generate sufficient returns.
This does not mean foreign investors rejected the long-term semiconductor thesis. It means the price, portfolio weight and liquidity profile had become increasingly difficult to justify.
The difference became visible during the historic rebound after the worst phase of the KOSPI crash. Foreign investors purchased a record 7.2 trillion won, approximately $5 billion, of Korean shares in one session, more than twice the previous daily record.
Foreign capital therefore acted in both directions.
It reduced exposure as concentration increased, then returned selectively after valuations and positioning had been compressed.
This behavior supports the argument that the KOSPI crash was not a simple rejection of Korean corporate fundamentals.
The Most Important Driver Was Leverage
Leverage changes the relationship between information and price.
An unleveraged investor can continue holding a stock during a temporary decline if the long-term thesis remains intact. A leveraged investor may not have that option. Falling prices reduce collateral value, increase margin requirements and can force the sale of assets regardless of expected future returns.
This mechanism was central to the KOSPI crash.
South Korean retail investors had approximately 34.37 trillion won, around $23 billion, in margin loans during July, after the total reached a record 38.6 trillion won in June. At the same time, single-stock leveraged exchange-traded products had become heavily concentrated in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
Assets held in leveraged ETFs connected to the two Korean chipmakers fell from roughly $50 billion in late June to $17 billion by the end of July. Citi estimated that retail investors suffered approximately $38.7 billion in losses through the leveraged products.
The scale of these positions explains why the KOSPI crash became more violent than the changes in corporate fundamentals alone would justify.
Leverage did not merely increase the size of individual losses. It altered the behavior of the entire market.
How Daily-Reset Leveraged Products Amplified the KOSPI Crash
A leveraged ETF targeting twice the daily return of a stock must continually adjust its exposure.
When the underlying stock rises, the fund may need to buy additional exposure to maintain its target leverage for the next session. When the stock falls, the fund must reduce exposure, often by selling the underlying shares or related derivatives.
This creates procyclical behavior.
The product buys after prices rise and sells after prices fall.
During normal market conditions, these adjustments may be absorbed without significant disruption. When the fund becomes extremely large relative to the liquidity of the underlying security, rebalancing flows can influence the price they are supposed to track.
Before the KOSPI crash, some leveraged single-stock funds reportedly generated trading volumes several times larger than the average volume of the underlying company. One Hong Kong-listed two-times leveraged SK Hynix product had grown to approximately $7.78 billion, making it one of the largest products of its type globally.
This created a reflexive system.
A decline in SK Hynix forced leveraged products to reduce exposure.
The required selling pushed SK Hynix lower.
The additional decline generated new losses for retail holders and reduced collateral values.
Brokers issued margin calls.
Investors sold other positions to raise cash.
The decline in Samsung and SK Hynix pushed the KOSPI lower.
The index decline triggered circuit breakers and increased volatility estimates.
Institutional risk models instructed portfolios to reduce exposure.
This generated another round of selling.
The KOSPI crash became a liquidity event because every participant was reacting not only to information about profits but also to the behavior of other leveraged participants.
Why Circuit Breakers Could Not Solve the Problem
Circuit breakers are designed to interrupt disorderly markets and provide investors with time to reassess information.
The KOSPI triggered a circuit breaker on July 28 after falling more than 8% for the required period. It was the eighth activation during 2026 and the fourteenth in the index’s history. More than half of all historical KOSPI circuit breakers had occurred during the first six months of 2026.
That frequency shows the exceptional nature of the market environment.
However, a trading halt cannot eliminate leverage.
When trading resumes, funds still need to rebalance. Brokers still need additional collateral. Investors still need to reduce positions. A circuit breaker can delay execution, but it cannot remove the underlying imbalance between forced sellers and available buyers.
In some circumstances, the halt can even increase uncertainty because participants know that a backlog of required transactions remains unresolved.
The solution to the KOSPI crash therefore could not come from circuit breakers alone. It required the reduction of leveraged exposure, new buyers willing to absorb supply and a change in the regulatory treatment of single-stock products.
Record Earnings Could Not Protect SK Hynix
The contradiction at the center of the KOSPI crash was most visible in SK Hynix.
The company reported second-quarter revenue of 79.3 trillion won and operating profit of 60.5 trillion won, representing increases of 257% and 557% respectively from the previous year. Operating margin reached 76%, while the company said demand for HBM, AI-server DRAM and enterprise solid-state drives remained strong. SK Hynix also reported that HBM4 shipments had begun and emphasized long-term agreements with major customers. (SK Hynix Q2 2026 results)
These were not weak financial results.
Yet SK Hynix shares fell almost 20% intraday after the report before closing 9.6% lower. The company had delivered record performance but failed to exceed the expectations embedded in its valuation and positioning.
This distinction is essential for understanding the KOSPI crash.
Stock prices do not react to whether earnings are objectively good or bad. They react to the difference between actual results and the future already priced into the shares.
SK Hynix had become one of the central beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom. Investors were not merely expecting strong HBM demand. They were expecting extraordinary demand, persistent shortages, exceptional pricing power and limited competitive pressure.
When results failed to increase those expectations further, the market had no new reason to support an already crowded position.
The company’s fundamental strength therefore could not prevent a liquidity-driven decline.
Samsung Electronics Presented the Same Paradox
Samsung Electronics reported second-quarter revenue of 171.5 trillion won and operating profit of 89.5 trillion won, both quarterly records. Its semiconductor division benefited from strong demand for advanced memory and AI-related computing, while the company continued investing in high-performance computing, advanced process technologies and premium product categories. Reuters reported that Samsung’s semiconductor profit had increased approximately 250-fold, yet its shares nearly halved between the June peak and the late-July trough.
Again, the KOSPI crash was not being driven by an absence of profit.
The market was questioning the durability of those profits.
Memory semiconductors are historically cyclical. Periods of shortage and high pricing encourage producers to invest in additional capacity. That capacity eventually reaches the market, supply increases and prices weaken.
The AI cycle may be structurally stronger than previous memory cycles, but investors still need to determine how much current profitability reflects permanent demand and how much reflects a temporary imbalance between supply and capacity.
Samsung also faces a more complex corporate structure than SK Hynix. Strong semiconductor profits can coexist with weaker performance in mobile devices, consumer electronics, displays or other divisions.
The KOSPI crash forced investors to separate the genuine value of Samsung’s semiconductor exposure from the broader corporate and market premium that had accumulated during the rally.
The AI Trade Is Moving From Demand Certainty to Return-on-Capital Scrutiny
During the early phase of the artificial intelligence investment cycle, markets rewarded companies able to provide chips, memory, networking equipment, electricity, data centers and cloud infrastructure.
The logic was straightforward: AI capacity was scarce, demand was growing rapidly and the companies controlling essential infrastructure possessed pricing power.
The next phase is more demanding.
Investors are now asking whether the trillions of dollars committed to AI infrastructure will generate adequate returns on capital. They are examining whether hyperscalers can monetize new capacity, whether enterprise customers will pay for AI services and whether increased competition will reduce margins.
This transition has direct consequences for the KOSPI crash.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix sit upstream in the AI capital-expenditure cycle. Their revenues depend on customers continuing to build systems requiring increasingly sophisticated memory.
If investors begin questioning the economics of that buildout, memory producers can decline before their current earnings weaken. Equity markets discount future cash flows, not only the latest quarter.

China Introduced a New Competitive Risk
The market decline accelerated as investors considered the implications of growing Chinese semiconductor capacity.
ChangXin Memory Technologies, commonly known as CXMT, completed a powerful market debut, giving the company additional capital and visibility. Reports that a Chinese state-backed company had begun producing immersion deep-ultraviolet lithography equipment also increased concern that China could reduce its dependence on foreign semiconductor technology.
CXMT does not yet possess the same position as Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix in the most advanced high-bandwidth memory market.
However, competition does not need to begin at the technological frontier to affect profitability.
A Chinese producer can expand conventional DRAM supply, reduce pricing in lower segments and force Korean companies to allocate more capital toward innovation and capacity. The resulting pressure can eventually affect margins even if the Korean producers retain leadership in HBM.
The KOSPI crash therefore included two different concerns about China.
The first was direct competitive pressure in memory manufacturing.
The second was the possibility that Chinese advances in semiconductor equipment could accelerate the country’s broader technological independence.
Investors were not pricing the immediate elimination of Korean leadership. They were reducing the probability that the current level of pricing power would remain unchallenged.
The KOSPI Crash Is a Global Semiconductor Signal
South Korea’s semiconductor sector supplies memory used across global data centers, smartphones, computers, vehicles and industrial systems.
The KOSPI crash therefore provides information about more than Korean equities.
It indicates that markets are becoming less willing to treat every expansion in AI infrastructure as automatically value-creating. It also shows that investors are distinguishing between technological demand and investment returns.
The same reassessment can affect Nvidia, Micron, TSMC, equipment manufacturers, data-center operators, cloud platforms and energy companies connected to the AI buildout.
The transmission mechanism works through expectations.
If hyperscalers slow capital expenditure, demand for accelerators and advanced memory may weaken.
If memory supply expands faster than demand, pricing power may decline.
If financing costs remain elevated, companies may require faster returns from AI projects.
If new competitors increase capacity, incumbent margins may normalize.
If leveraged investors are forced to sell in Korea, they may reduce exposure elsewhere to raise liquidity.
This explains why the KOSPI crash produced volatility across Asian and U.S. semiconductor markets.

The Korean market has become one of the central transmission points connecting traditional equities, leveraged ETFs, global technology portfolios and digital-asset infrastructure.
The Korean Won Added Another Layer of Risk
Foreign investors evaluating South Korean equities must consider both the value of the shares and the value of the Korean won.
During July, the won recovered more than 8% after reaching a seventeen-year low near 1,561.50 per dollar. South Korean authorities reportedly conducted a rare dollar-selling intervention alongside Japanese action in the foreign-exchange market, helping the won strengthen to approximately 1,418 per dollar.
Currency appreciation can support foreign-investor returns when Korean assets are translated back into dollars or euros. It can also reduce imported inflation and lower the domestic cost of energy.
However, rapid currency moves can create additional portfolio instability.
Foreign investors may hedge currency exposure, and changes in those hedges can generate capital flows unrelated to company fundamentals. A stronger won can also reduce the translated value of overseas revenues earned by Korean exporters.
The KOSPI crash therefore occurred inside a broader adjustment involving equity exposure, dollar liquidity and foreign-exchange intervention.
On August 3, the won weakened again to approximately 1,429.8 per dollar as the KOSPI fell more than 5%.
The relationship between the KOSPI and the won will remain important. A falling stock market combined with renewed currency weakness would make it more difficult for foreign investors to return. A stable or stronger won could improve the attractiveness of Korean assets after the valuation reset.
The Bank of Korea Cannot Focus Only on the Stock Market
The KOSPI crash creates pressure on policymakers, but the Bank of Korea faces objectives that extend beyond equity prices.
On July 16, the central bank raised its base rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%. It cited inflation, exchange-rate volatility, rising property prices and accelerating household debt. Consumer inflation had increased to 3.2% in June, while the central bank expected economic growth to remain supported by semiconductor exports, investment and improving consumption. This creates a difficult policy balance.
Lower interest rates could support equities and reduce the cost of leverage. They could also increase household borrowing, property speculation, currency weakness and inflation.
Higher rates can support the won and contain inflation, but they increase financing costs and make leveraged positions more vulnerable.
The Bank of Korea therefore cannot simply respond to the KOSPI crash with broad monetary easing.
The central bank must determine whether the decline represents a threat to financial stability or the correction of speculative excess.
This distinction will influence whether policymakers provide liquidity to preserve market functioning without reversing the broader monetary stance.
Regulators Have Acknowledged Their Role
South Korean authorities had approved domestic single-stock leveraged products partly because Korean investors were already purchasing similar instruments listed in Hong Kong and other foreign markets.
The objective was to provide stronger domestic investor protections and retain activity inside the Korean regulatory framework.
The outcome was the rapid expansion of products connected primarily to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
As volatility increased, regulators blocked new listings, restricted marketing and raised the minimum cash deposit required to trade single-stock leveraged ETFs from 10 million won to 30 million won. The strengthened requirement took effect on July 31. (Financial Services Commission measures)
After the most severe phase of the KOSPI crash, Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol and Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon publicly apologized for introducing the products without sufficient consideration of the risks.
Authorities also discussed investment caps, increased transaction costs, simulated-trading requirements and a legal framework for emergency market stabilization.
The response demonstrates that the KOSPI crash was not viewed merely as an ordinary decline in asset prices.
It exposed a regulatory design problem.
Products intended for short-term tactical trading had become large enough to affect the underlying companies, the national benchmark and household financial stability.
The New Rules Are Already Changing Trading Activity
The first evidence of the regulatory impact appeared on August 3.
Trading volume in sixteen single-stock leveraged ETFs tracking Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix fell from 12.4 trillion won on the previous Thursday to approximately 1.2 trillion won after the higher cash requirement took effect.
That decline suggests the rules can reduce new speculative activity.
However, reduced trading volume does not eliminate existing losses or guarantee that the KOSPI crash has reached a durable bottom.
Several structural problems remain.
Similar leveraged products are still available in foreign markets.
Existing investors may not be required to liquidate immediately.
Daily-reset mechanics remain procyclical.
Large price movements can still generate significant hedging requirements.
Retail investors may migrate toward other leveraged instruments.
Lower trading volume can reduce volatility, but it can also reduce liquidity during periods of stress.
Regulation can prevent the next expansion of the same imbalance. It cannot instantly reverse the consequences of the previous expansion.
The Social Damage Extends Beyond Portfolio Losses
The KOSPI crash created a political and social reaction because the leveraged rally had attracted ordinary households, retirees and younger investors seeking to participate in the AI boom.
Some investors had borrowed money to increase exposure near the market peak. Reuters reported that protestors placed funeral wreaths outside the National Assembly, accusing policymakers of allowing products that had inflicted severe losses on retail traders.
This matters because financial-market credibility is a form of economic capital.
If households believe regulators promoted a speculative market and intervened only after losses occurred, trust can deteriorate. Investors may withdraw from equities, reduce long-term savings participation or become more attracted to political demands for compensation.
A government bailout, however, would create a different problem. Protecting investors from the consequences of leveraged speculation could encourage similar behavior in the future.
The appropriate policy response must therefore distinguish between restoring market function and guaranteeing investment outcomes.
The objective should be to improve disclosure, suitability requirements, product design and systemic-risk controls without converting private speculation into a public liability.
Is the KOSPI Crash a Buying Opportunity?
The valuation reset has attracted renewed interest from global investors.
J.P. Morgan analysts estimated that the leveraged ETF unwind was largely complete and that hedge funds had completed approximately 90% of their deleveraging. Other investors argued that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were being sold because of index concentration and forced flows rather than a collapse in the memory-chip outlook.
There is a credible bullish case.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix remain among the world’s most important semiconductor producers.
HBM demand remains connected to a structural expansion in AI computing.
Both companies reported exceptional profitability.
Valuations fell dramatically during the KOSPI crash.
Regulatory measures are reducing the volume of leveraged products.
Foreign investors demonstrated that they are willing to return when prices become attractive.
However, a lower price is not sufficient evidence of a durable bottom.
The record 17.9% rebound followed by another 5.12% decline illustrates that volatility remains extreme. A market moving by double digits in opposite directions within several sessions is still being controlled by positioning and liquidity.
Investors must therefore distinguish between valuation opportunity and timing certainty.
The first can exist without the second.
Three Scenarios for the KOSPI After the Crash
Scenario One: Deleveraging Ends and Fundamentals Reassert Control
In the constructive scenario, assets in leveraged ETFs stabilize, margin debt continues declining and foreign investors rebuild positions in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
AI infrastructure spending remains strong, HBM supply stays constrained and Chinese competition progresses slowly enough to preserve Korean pricing power.
The KOSPI begins trading on earnings and valuation rather than forced flows.
Under this scenario, the KOSPI crash would represent a violent but temporary market-structure correction. The index could recover a meaningful portion of the decline, although returning immediately to the June peak would remain difficult because investors would demand a lower leverage premium.
Scenario Two: A Volatile Range Replaces the Previous Uptrend
In the base scenario, semiconductor fundamentals remain strong but no longer improve fast enough to justify the previous valuation.
Leveraged selling decreases, but foreign investors remain cautious. The Bank of Korea maintains restrictive policy, the won remains volatile and concerns about Chinese capacity limit multiple expansion.
The KOSPI experiences powerful rallies and sharp reversals without establishing a stable trend.
