A critical failure in oracle architecture undermines trust in Sui DeFi
The decentralized finance ecosystem built on Sui is facing a severe trust crisis after Cetus Protocol, one of its core decentralized exchanges (DEXs), suffered a catastrophic exploit. The breach led to an estimated $223 million in stolen funds and has triggered widespread panic across Sui-based assets. As the investigation unfolds, the incident highlights the inherent risks in oracle design and liquidity mechanisms on emerging Layer 1 networks.
Cetus halts operations after massive exploit
Cetus Protocol officially announced on May 22 that it had temporarily paused its smart contract operations to mitigate further losses following the detection of a security breach. According to the team, attackers drained hundreds of millions in assets by exploiting a vulnerability suspected to stem from its oracle system.
Blockchain analysis firm Lookonchain first reported that over $260 million was siphoned from the DEX’s pools, with the attacker rapidly converting the stolen tokens into USDC and bridging them to Ethereum, where they were swapped into ETH.
In a follow-up statement, Cetus clarified that they were able to successfully freeze $162 million of the compromised funds by halting their contracts. They are now working closely with the Sui Foundation and other ecosystem partners to recover the remaining losses.
Collapse of TVL and token price triggers Sui-wide contagion
DeFiLlama data confirms that Cetus’s total value locked (TVL) dropped sharply from over $280 million to approximately $75 million in a matter of hours. CETUS, the native token of the protocol, plunged more than 24%, hitting $0.15 at press time.
The exploit’s impact rippled across the entire Sui ecosystem. Seven of the eleven major Sui-based tokens tracked by CryptoSlate reported daily losses of 5% or more. Although the SUI token itself held relatively steady, user sentiment has been significantly shaken.
Rosco Kalis, founder of Revoke Cash, commented that the majority of the stolen funds belonged to liquidity providers (LPs), meaning users who had contributed capital to Cetus’s trading pools were disproportionately affected.
Technical root cause points to oracle manipulation
Preliminary analysis indicates that the exploit was not a traditional hack, but rather an advanced manipulation of Cetus’s internal oracle mechanism. According to Alex Horlan, CTO at HackenProof, the attacker likely used a minimal liquidity injection to alter the protocol’s internal pricing logic and extract value.
The vulnerability may lie within the protocol’s handling of key DeFi functions, particularly how it calculates token ratios, rounds decimal values, and processes assets with zero decimal points. If exploited carefully, such weaknesses can be used to execute arbitrage-style extractions without depositing actual value into the pools.
A team member initially stated in the Cetus Discord that the protocol “wasn’t hacked” and that a “bug in the oracle” had been detected. This now appears to be accurate: multiple analysts on Crypto Twitter are converging on the theory that the exploit originated from flawed oracle logic rather than external malicious code.
Dual oracle system failed to prevent manipulation
Cetus Protocol utilizes a dual oracle setup, intended to offer both decentralization and internal reliability:
- Internal Oracle via Concentrated Liquidity Pools: These pools are designed to act as on-chain pricing oracles by offering real-time liquidity metrics derived from actual user trades. This system, in theory, reduces reliance on off-chain data and should be more manipulation-resistant.
- Integration with Pyth Network: Cetus also contributes pricing data to the Pyth Network, a decentralized oracle system built to enhance data accuracy across chains.
Despite these layered protections, it remains unclear whether the pricing flaw originated from the internal liquidity model or the Pyth oracle feed. At the time of writing, the Pyth Network has not issued an official statement regarding its involvement in the incident.
Ecosystem support and Binance intervention
In a surprising show of solidarity, Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao confirmed that his team has reached out to assist Cetus in containing the fallout and recovering lost assets. Although no technical details have been released, Zhao’s support signals the severity of the breach and its broader implications for market confidence.
Community sentiment remains divided. While some applaud Cetus’s quick response in halting further damage and collaborating with the Sui Foundation, others question how such a critical flaw passed through audits or stress testing. The event has rekindled debates around DeFi protocol security and the need for more robust oracle validation methods.
Long-term implications for the Sui ecosystem
The incident casts a shadow over Sui’s ambitions as a DeFi powerhouse. As a relatively young Layer 1, Sui had been gaining momentum in recent months due to its innovative architecture and fast-growing dApp ecosystem. However, events like this can erode institutional confidence and hinder user adoption.
For liquidity providers, the exploit raises critical questions about the safety of staking assets in newer DeFi platforms. Unless Cetus and the broader Sui ecosystem can quickly resolve the issue, restore funds, and rebuild trust, users may migrate liquidity elsewhere.
