The fallout from the massive Coinbase breach has taken a dramatic turn. In a stunning show of confidence — or mockery — the alleged hacker behind the attack has moved tens of millions of dollars in stolen assets using THORChain, an increasingly controversial decentralized exchange protocol, and left an on-chain message aimed at blockchain investigator ZachXBT.

The event not only underscores the persistent vulnerabilities in crypto infrastructure but also reignites the debate about decentralized protocols being used as tools for laundering illicit funds. With the Coinbase hacker moving $42.5 million through THORChain and mocking security experts in the process, the incident paints a troubling picture of current on-chain security dynamics.

$42.5 Million Laundered Through THORChain: The Timeline

On May 21, blockchain trackers spotted an enormous transfer: the hacker involved in the Coinbase data breach swapped approximately $42.5 million in Bitcoin into Ethereum using THORChain’s anonymous swapping service. Within hours, further activity revealed another swap of 8,697 ETH into 22 million DAI, followed by a connected address exchanging 9,081 ETH into 23 million DAI.

This sequence of moves not only enabled the attacker to obfuscate the asset trail but also showed a level of operational sophistication in using THORChain’s cross-chain liquidity.

On-Chain Mockery: “L Bozo” Message and Meme Target ZachXBT

What shocked the crypto community wasn’t just the technical execution, but the hacker’s taunt that followed.

After the ETH swap, the perpetrator embedded a message into a transaction: “L bozo”, accompanied by a meme video of NBA player James Worthy smoking a cigar — a mocking gesture directed at well-known crypto sleuth ZachXBT.

ZachXBT later posted a screenshot of the on-chain message, linking it to the same address believed to be behind the Coinbase breach. The message marked a brazen statement from the attacker — an act of defiance, or perhaps mockery, of the broader security community’s ability to trace and stop illicit activity.

The Fallout of the Coinbase Breach

The root of this drama lies in one of the most severe data breaches in crypto exchange history. In December 2024, Coinbase was targeted in an attack that compromised sensitive personal data of over 69,000 users. While the breach went undisclosed until May 2025, the impact is now coming into full view.

The stolen data included user names, home addresses, and potentially compromising personal identifiers. Following the breach, the hackers demanded a $20 million ransom to prevent the public release of the data. Coinbase refused to pay and countered by offering a $20 million bounty for information that could lead to the arrest or identification of the attackers.

Coinbase now estimates that the financial fallout could be between $180 million and $400 million, including customer compensation, security overhauls, and legal challenges.

At least six lawsuits have already been filed against the company, with plaintiffs alleging that Coinbase failed to implement adequate safeguards and neglected to disclose the breach promptly.

THORChain’s Role Under Fire

The spotlight is now turning sharply onto THORChain, a decentralized cross-chain protocol designed to allow asset swaps without centralized intermediaries. While it offers privacy and flexibility to users, critics argue that its features have made it increasingly popular among hackers and illicit actors.

The Coinbase incident isn’t the first time THORChain has been implicated. In March 2025, the protocol’s swap volume surged following the Bybit hack, which saw over $1.4 billion stolen. Blockchain security experts traced large volumes of those stolen assets through THORChain, with revenue for the protocol exceeding $5 million in a single day.

Perhaps most alarmingly, North Korea’s Lazarus Group — a known cybercrime organization — has also used THORChain to launder stolen crypto, according to multiple blockchain intelligence firms.

Controversy deepened when a THORChain developer known as “Pluto” resigned in protest after a proposal to block addresses linked to Lazarus was rejected by the community. The vote highlighted the governance challenges within decentralized systems when national security risks collide with permissionless architecture.

Implications for Decentralized Infrastructure

The unfolding saga reveals the fragile balance between decentralization and security. While protocols like THORChain embody the ethos of censorship resistance and privacy, their use by malicious actors forces the industry to ask difficult questions.

Should truly decentralized systems bear some responsibility for facilitating criminal activity? And if not, how can law enforcement keep pace with attackers who exploit these tools with increasing agility?

The hacker’s taunt of ZachXBT adds a symbolic layer to this dilemma: it’s no longer just about tracing wallets and freezing funds — it’s also about narrative dominance. Public blockchain transactions, now weaponized for trolling and reputation warfare, highlight the social dimension of cybersecurity in crypto.

A Wake-Up Call for the Industry

This incident is a warning shot to exchanges, regulators, and developers alike. For centralized exchanges like Coinbase, the need for robust internal security and proactive transparency is non-negotiable. For decentralized protocols, a deeper discussion around governance and accountability is overdue.

ZachXBT, despite the mockery, continues to play a pivotal role in tracing illicit funds and raising awareness around blockchain abuse. His work, though often done independently, has consistently aided both platforms and law enforcement.

But the challenge ahead is systemic. Without clear frameworks and real-time risk monitoring for decentralized protocols, we risk seeing more sophisticated attacks — with attackers not only evading detection but publicly celebrating their success.
