Crypto Address Poisoning Scams Surge, Stealing $1.6M in Just One Week

Crypto address poisoning scams stole over $1.6M in just one week, exploiting transaction history manipulation. Learn how these scams work and how to protect yourself.

The cryptocurrency space has faced a surge in crypto address poisoning scams, with unsuspecting users losing more than $1.6 million in just the past week. This wave of attacks has been marked by increasingly sophisticated methods, causing some of the largest individual thefts seen this year through this tactic.

Address poisoning is not new, but the scale and frequency of these attacks are accelerating. In a single week, losses have surpassed those recorded in the entire month of March, signaling that scammers are intensifying their efforts as crypto adoption grows.

Major Losses from Coordinated Attacks

The largest incident this week involved a victim sending 140 ETH—worth approximately $636,500 at the time—to a fraudulent wallet address. According to blockchain security firm ScamSniffer, the victim mistakenly copied a “lookalike” address that had been deliberately seeded into their transaction history.

The attacker’s strategy was straightforward but deadly effective: insert a fake address resembling a legitimate one into the victim’s recent transactions, anticipating that the victim might later copy it for a future transfer. The contaminated history worked as intended, costing the victim more than half a million dollars in a single transaction.

Unfortunately, this was not an isolated case. Another user lost $880,000 in a separate poisoning scam on Sunday. Additional reports included one victim losing $80,000 and another losing $62,000. Collectively, these incidents highlight the alarming efficiency of address poisoning tactics when combined with user inattention.

How Crypto Address Poisoning Works

Address poisoning relies on the visual similarity between two wallet addresses. Scammers take advantage of the fact that most users only check the first and last few characters of an address before confirming a transaction.

The process usually follows this pattern:

Mimicking the target address – The attacker generates a wallet address visually similar to the victim’s regular contact. Seeding the address – The scammer sends a tiny amount of crypto from the fake address to the victim’s wallet. This makes the address appear in the victim’s transaction history. The trap – At a later date, the victim copies the fake address from their history instead of the real one, unknowingly sending funds to the scammer.

This method is particularly effective because it doesn’t require breaking into the victim’s wallet—it simply exploits human error and habit.

Transaction History Poisoning and Phishing Risks

The technique has been described by blockchain security companies as “transaction history poisoning.” Web3 security firm Web3 Antivirus explains that once the fake address is in place, the history becomes a trap for future copy-paste operations.

ScamSniffer also reported that beyond address poisoning, attackers are combining this method with malicious signature signing schemes. In these cases, victims are tricked into approving transactions or granting token spending permissions through phishing prompts. Common malicious signatures include:

approve increaseAllowance permit

In one incident this week, a victim lost $165,000 worth of BLOCK and DOLO tokens after signing malicious approvals. Such attacks often occur on compromised dApps, fake websites, or through deceptive links sent on social media and messaging platforms.

A Growing Threat to the Crypto Ecosystem

The numbers are telling: $1.6 million stolen in just one week from address poisoning alone, compared to $1.2 million stolen during the entire month of March. This growth reflects both the adaptability of scammers and the continued vulnerabilities in how users handle wallet transactions.

The rise in these scams has been linked to the increasing number of new participants in the crypto market. Many newcomers lack experience in verifying addresses thoroughly, relying instead on quick visual checks that make them easy targets for address manipulation.

Preventing Address Poisoning Scams

Experts stress that preventing these scams requires a combination of better tools and disciplined user habits. Recommended measures include:

Use an address book or whitelist – Storing trusted addresses directly in a wallet prevents reliance on transaction history. Verify the full address – Check every character, not just the beginning and end, before confirming a transfer. Avoid copying from transaction history – Always use stored addresses or retrieve them from verified sources. Enable security prompts – Some wallets allow additional confirmation layers, such as human-readable names for saved addresses. Be wary of unsolicited transfers – Receiving a small, unexpected amount from an unknown address could be an attempt to poison your history.

Web3 Antivirus reinforces the message: “Use an address book or whitelist and verify the full address before sending. It only takes one mistake to lose everything.”

Why This Scam Works So Well

Unlike phishing attacks that rely on tricking users into revealing private keys, address poisoning leverages existing blockchain transparency. Since all transactions are public, attackers can easily identify active wallets and tailor fake addresses to mimic legitimate ones.

The public nature of blockchain data makes it simple to find high-value wallets, track their activity, and time the insertion of a poisoned address for maximum effect. This “low-tech” approach, combined with human error, is what makes the scam so effective.

Industry Response and Future Outlook

Security experts are urging wallet developers and blockchain platforms to implement better safeguards, such as:

Highlighting addresses in transaction history that differ by only a few characters from frequent contacts. Warning users when sending to an address they have never used before. Integrating domain-based identifiers (like ENS names) to reduce reliance on raw hexadecimal addresses.

If platforms adopt these protections, the frequency of address poisoning attacks could be significantly reduced. However, as history has shown, scammers often adapt quickly to new defenses, meaning user education will remain a critical line of defense.

For now, the spike in crypto address poisoning scams serves as a stark reminder that even seasoned traders can fall victim to simple yet devastating schemes. As the crypto market continues to expand, vigilance and robust security practices will be more important than ever.
