The failed cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox has executed another significant Bitcoin transfer, moving 11,833 BTC worth over $930 million. This follows a similar transfer on March 6, when the exchange moved 12,000 BTC valued at over $1 billion. These transactions suggest an acceleration in the long-awaited creditor repayment process.
Massive Bitcoin Transfer by Mt. Gox
According to blockchain tracking platform Lookonchain, citing data from Arkham Intelligence, the latest transfer was split into two transactions:
- 11,501 BTC (approximately $905.1 million) were sent to a new wallet.
- 332 BTC (approximately $26.1 million) were transferred to a warm wallet.
The total transaction cost Mt. Gox a negligible $2.13 in fees, indicating efficient blockchain transaction management.
Bitcoin Price Reaction to the Transfer
The movement of such a large amount of Bitcoin had an immediate impact on market sentiment. Bitcoin’s price dropped by 2.4%, falling to $76,784 within 30 minutes, according to CoinGecko. However, the market quickly rebounded, pushing BTC back up to $79,275 shortly afterward.
Arthur Hayes, the founder of Maelstrom, addressed market concerns on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that Bitcoin could experience further downside, potentially reaching $70,000, before recovering.
Acceleration of Creditor Reimbursements
These recent transactions align with Mt. Gox’s plan to complete creditor repayments by October 31, 2025, following an earlier postponement in October 2024.
Notably, part of the first batch of transfers—worth approximately $15 million—was sent to BitGo, the company managing creditor reimbursements. Analysts at Spot On Chain suggest that the 332 BTC transferred to the warm wallet might also be designated for this purpose.
Declining Mt. Gox Bitcoin Reserves
The recent transactions have further reduced Mt. Gox’s Bitcoin reserves. Currently, the exchange holds approximately 24,411 BTC, valued at $1.94 billion.
Since June 2024, Mt. Gox has been actively moving its Bitcoin holdings, having transferred approximately $9.2 billion worth of BTC. The rapid movement of these funds suggests a structured plan to finally settle outstanding claims.
A Decade-Long Wait Nears an End
Founded in 2010, Mt. Gox was once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, handling 70–80% of all BTC transactions at its peak. However, in 2014, the platform suffered a devastating cyberattack, resulting in the loss of 850,000 BTC and ultimately leading to its bankruptcy.
For nearly a decade, creditors have been waiting for the recovery of their funds. With the recent transactions signaling an expedited repayment process, many Mt. Gox clients may finally receive their long-overdue reimbursements ahead of schedule, marking the conclusion of one of the most infamous sagas in cryptocurrency history.
