Global investment firm VanEck has taken a significant step toward expanding its cryptocurrency investment offerings by registering an Avalanche exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. The registration, filed in Delaware on March 10, signals a potential move toward the launch of a spot AVAX ETF, adding to VanEck’s growing portfolio of digital asset investment products.
VanEck’s Avalanche ETF Filing: A Strategic Move
According to public records from Delaware’s official state website, VanEck has officially registered the “VanEck Avalanche ETF” as a trust corporate service entity. This move follows a pattern similar to previous VanEck ETF registrations for other cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL). The filing hints at VanEck’s intention to expand its reach within the crypto investment space, offering institutional and retail investors exposure to Avalanche’s AVAX token through a regulated financial instrument.
This development comes at a time when AVAX has faced a significant decline in market value. Year-to-date, the token has dropped by 55%, reflecting a broader market downturn, although Bitcoin has experienced a milder 17% decline in 2025, according to CoinGecko data.
VanEck’s Expanding Crypto ETF Portfolio
The Avalanche ETF registration marks VanEck’s fourth standalone crypto ETF filing, following its Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana ETF applications. Notably, in June 2024, VanEck became one of the first issuers to file for a spot Solana ETF with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), cementing its reputation as a pioneering force in the crypto ETF sector.
VanEck has long been a key player in the crypto investment landscape. It was among the first asset managers to file for a Bitcoin futures ETF in 2017 and later secured approval for a spot Bitcoin ETF in early 2024, reinforcing its commitment to bridging traditional finance and the digital asset space.
Avalanche’s Position in the Market
Launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, Avalanche is a decentralized smart contract platform designed for high-speed blockchain applications. It was developed to compete with Ethereum by offering greater scalability and lower transaction costs. AVAX, the platform’s native utility token, has seen significant growth since its inception, briefly ranking among the top 10 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization in 2021.
As of now, AVAX holds the position of the 20th largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of approximately $7 billion, according to CoinGecko data. Despite its recent price struggles, Avalanche continues to be a key player in the blockchain ecosystem, with increasing adoption in DeFi and enterprise applications.
Competition and Market Outlook
VanEck’s move to register an Avalanche ETF has sparked discussions within the crypto community, particularly regarding the absence of a similar ETF for XRP. Some market observers have pointed out that VanEck’s prioritization of an AVAX ETF over an XRP-based product suggests strategic positioning based on institutional demand and regulatory considerations.
While VanEck is the first to register an Avalanche ETF in the U.S., it is not the only asset manager with an interest in AVAX-based investment products. In October 2024, Grayscale filed with the SEC to convert its multi-coin fund—which includes AVAX and four other cryptocurrencies—into an ETF. This indicates a growing institutional appetite for broader crypto exposure beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
VanEck’s registration of an Avalanche ETF in Delaware represents a bold step toward expanding crypto investment opportunities in the traditional financial market. While regulatory approvals remain a key hurdle, the move aligns with the broader trend of increasing institutional interest in alternative cryptocurrencies. With AVAX’s market performance fluctuating, a regulated ETF could provide a more structured avenue for investors to gain exposure to Avalanche’s ecosystem.
As the regulatory landscape for crypto ETFs continues to evolve, all eyes will be on VanEck’s next steps and whether its Avalanche ETF will secure SEC approval. If successful, this product could pave the way for additional crypto ETFs, further integrating digital assets into mainstream finance.
